Grand Canyon - Overview

The Grand Canyon is a deep, beautiful chasm which was carved through the rocks of the Colorado Plateau over a million years ago. Filled with breath-taking views, hiking trails and white water river adventures on the turbulent Colorado River, this National Park sees an average of 4 million visitors annually.

In addition to being a natural wonder of the world and a scenic paradise, the Grand Canyon is a haven for wildlife. The best time for animal watching is early winter. This is when the wildlife forge for food to store for later use. Wild animals can become dependent on visitor handouts so do not feed the animals. Remember it is dangerous and illegal to feed wild animals in a National Park and violators are fined.

It is advised never to attempt hiking between the Colorado River and the Grand Canyon Rim in a day. Rugged terrain and extreme temperatures cause a surprising majority of healthy young people under the age of 40 to become victims requiring a rescue from this remote area.
